What layout are you using here? The documentation refers to an attribute called columns, and provides very elaborate documentation for the behaviour of this attribute in the square/circle, slideshow and masonry layouts (it is not applicable to Justified Grid and Mosaic layouts). Depending on the layout, the calculation is impacted by a global setting (also in the documentation link) This attribute also shows up for applicable layouts when you are constructing the shortcode in the Wizard, as an option in the “Configure Your Layout” screen, namely “Number of columns in output”.
