I want to make a WordPress site where people can log in as members for free and make posts. I also want for my site to have different page categories where members would for example in one page category share pictures, and in another page category share their thoughts.
Is it possible?
Should I buy a WordPress plan for that to happen?
And how much would it cost to pay someone to help me make a member area?
Btw… I’m on Mac

Your question is not clear. Can you please explain it more?
What does it mean one page they will share thoughts and another page images? Can you please explain this part?
I’m guessing you don’t want to code this functionality?
Sounds like you need a forum plugin. I’ve used a good free one in the past called [wpForo](https://wpforo.com/)
In this way you can set up a board for sharing pictures and it would generate it’s own url. Same for thoughts. And more communities if you’d like (unlimited). The board would automatically include member registration by the fact that it’s a forum where users can register.
OKAY. Hold up here.
With the resources others have provided for you here, I’m hoping you understand the concept of web hosting.
WordPress is software. It can be run on any third-party host. Hosts provide you with a lower cost overall, where you only pay for your hosting and any pro tier themes or plugins you might need. Or you can just use free or freemium options.
WordPress.com is a platform that breaks your ability to use WP up into costly tiers if you want to use WordPress in its full capacity.
There are fully managed WordPress hosts that allow you to have a fully supported WP site without paying the WP.com premiums.
For example, Flywheel is great and starts at $15 a month for their starter plan. With similar hosting plans, You aren’t limited in anyway and have tech support at the ready.
As for your Mac situation…you typically don’t host a site from your local computer. You CAN install WordPress, the software, easily via something like Local for WP and start working on your site locally. This will not be accessible (unless you allow it, via their proxy tool) from the web. Even then, that’s not a hosting solution.
You can install a local dev environment on any computer.
Sounds like you may need the do some more research or hire a dev.
Bearer of bad news, in reading your replies I don’t believe you are qualified to make any sort of membership website, even using WordPress com
