Please help – critical error and lost access

[ad_1]

Hi there
I am volunteering for a dog organisation who, had their website built around 7 years ago by a freelancer. In this time it’s not been updated

We had issues accessing it, the owner did not know password and her email did not work, she could only login via the admin link and username. I managed to gain access by updating the WP site and changing password through the domain host. We checked the email linked to admin and it was correct.

After getting access to the dashboard, I started to update the plugins. This of course, crashed the site with a critical error and logged me out. The problem is, the email WP claims to have sent to the admin email never arrived. I can’t login to access WP forum to post as it says the email (which we checked and confirmed!) is unknown.

Please can anyone help? The whole site is down and I’m not sure how to fix it

  1. SFTP, backup the website as it is. Then remove plugins until you gain access to the dashboard again. Do regular backups as you move forward in the process of updating.

  2. As @ironicbeaver stated you’ll need ftp access to get back in. Otherwise you’ll have to contact the host. Try but to update any sites without any of these accesses first and always update on a staging environment first.
