Hey,
I've been using Polylang for some time now for three languages on my website (EN, ES, PT) with the option of choosing the language with the "The language is set from the directory name in pretty permalinks" option (see Polylang's options here). Said in other words, my current URL structure is:
https://petme.social/ for English
https://petme.social/es/ for Spanish
https://petme.social/pt/ for Portuguese
However, I recently bought an .es domain and would like to migrate the Spanish version of the website to that domain and start building content focused on the Spanish market (blogs, etc). Polylang has the option to use different domains or subdomains for each language. However, if I switch it on, then I'll need to create a separate subdomain for Portuguese.
Is there any way to configure Polylang in such a way that I keep the existing structure for English and Portuguese, but use the new domain for Spanish? So that it looks like this:
https://petme.social/ for English
https://petme.es/ for Spanish
https://petme.social/pt/ for Portuguese
I tried setting up Polylang on the .ES domain with different domains putting https://petme.social/ for English and https://petme.es/pt/ for Portuguese, but once you choose the different domains option, it actually removes the language directories (like /pt/ and /en/).
I know a possible solution would be creating a subdomain for Portuguese, but I just don't want to deal with 3 separate installations of WordPress or have to do a multisite (which might break it and might not even work on an existing installation because one is a subdomain and the other a different domain).
Has anyone faced the same problem and do you have any ideas for solutions? I might eventually go for the subdomain, but wanted to make sure there is no way to do it otherwise and haven't been able to find someone in a similar situation.
