I would create a structure like this instead:

- container
  -- grid
    --- container a
    --- container b
       ---- image
    --- container c

container A settings: width 33.33%, height:100%, margin-right: -50%, background image, min-height:300px.

container B settings: width 33.33%, height: 100%, z-index:1, position:relative, display:flex, flex-direction: columns, align-items: center, justify-content:center.

container C settings: width 33.33%, height: 100%, margin-left:-50%,background image.
