Putting images side by side using column method (when I resize they overlap)

I created a 2 column block in wordpress and put an image in each one. When I resize 1 of the images it doesn’t ‘move over’ the other image and instead just goes behind the other image so they are overlapping. How do I fix this so the images don’t overlap. Also how do i widen the 2 column block so it takes up the entire width of my website page?
