Is there a difference between using a theme as your homepage and a page as your homepage?
I can’t type on the themed homepage while I can type on the page homepage. Thoughts?

There has to be a page somewhere. Perhaps your theme creates its own ‘homepage’ by pulling in content from different widgets or post types – I’ve seen some themes from ThemeForest do that.
Regardless – it doesn’t make any difference – it’s all HTML at the end of the day.
