Question

[ad_1]

So, first off, I should start off by saying I am a total scrub when it comes to this. When I was 16/17 years old, I dabbled in HTML but that was years ago and things have changed now.

I have recently created a WordPress site and I had a few questions:

1. What are the benefits of using WordPress to get a domain name vs using a third party site to host it?
2. Are the features you get from WordPress worth it vs the third party site?
3. If you use a third party site, what would you recommend?

Any and all help and advice would be appreciated.

  1. 1. Assuming you’re referring to WordPress.com: Get hosting elsewhere using the .org software. WordPress.com uses a proprietary, locked down, and overpriced version.
    2. It’s the other way around. Overall more featured hosting elsewhere. The only benefit I could see is support, which I’ve heard okay things about.
    3. Head to wordpress.org for their recommendations for hosts. I’ve had decent experience with DreamHost for a client.

ETA: See the pinned post on .com vs .org

  2. Using wordpress to buy domain/hosting – gives money to support WP. It’s got a fair CDN/caching set-up and is built for WP so it’s pretty good. But it’s more expensive than other hosting.

I can tell you who to avoid more than who to go to. GoDaddy is an absolute no – the hosting is sub-par, features limited and support awful. Ionos has a custom control-panel that is utter garbage.

Look for LINUX based cPanel (or dedicated WP hosting) – with server-side caching preferred. Then go on a balance of reviews vs cost.
