Questions about Privacy etc. from a WordPress newbie

Big news, I have finally purchased my site domain on WordPress on an Explorer plan! I have a few questions regarding my online privacy, and also where exactly my site is existing online. I will try to make this as clear as possible, but all the questions are sort of intertwined, so bear with me. I deeply appreciate any insights on the following:

1. **Hosting:** Yes I saw Rule #3, but without this information nothing else is going to make sense… I purchased my domain through my WordPress account, with no other sites involved. In the beginning, I was trying to purchase the domain through Bluehost, but this did not work. (I don’t think this was the correct approach, as I should have been going through WordPress directly.) Anyway, nowhere in the process of purchasing the domain and the plan through WordPress was I prompted to choose a hosting service. *Does this mean that WordPress itself will be hosting my site?*
2. **Privacy (Domain):** Back during the Bluehost shenanigans, I learned about the WHOIS database and the importance of protecting your personal information (name, address, etc.) associated with your domain. Bluehost provided protection services to obscure all that info—but again, nowhere in the process of registration with WordPress did I see any mention of this. *So is protection from WHOIS and other entities built directly into your site when you purchase a domain with WordPress?*
3. **Privacy (Profile):** I know it’s supposed to be simple, but this part has confused me a lot. The “Profile” contains a place for first and last name, display name, about me, and a picture—*are these all public, including first and last name?* Also, I’ve tried to look at a few sample bloggers to see what personal information their profiles might show, but I can’t seem to view anyone’s profile but my own…
4. **Privacy (Username):** When I first made my WordPress account, I naively just put my email as the username. After realizing this was a mistake, I changed my username to something other than my email address. Importantly, I made this change **before** actually purchasing the domain. However, shortly after the transaction, I received an email from WordPress containing a hyperlink to my site, and when I clicked on it, I was redirected to a page (see screenshot) containing my email address! *Why did this show instead of the updated username?* (By the way, “Coming Soon” was the display name placeholder I had set, along with the black picture.)

  1. Firstly, please read the pinned post in this sub to understand the difference between WordPress (CMS software) and [Wordpress.com](https://Wordpress.com) (hosting company with their own fork of WordPress). They are 2 very different things. This sub is not related to wordpress.com

Buying a domain name and hosting are 2 separate things. The location of the domain name is not tied to your hosting.

Domain Privacy: everything is explained here: [https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-registrations-and-privacy/](https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-registrations-and-privacy/)

    Profile Privacy: [https://wordpress.com/support/privacy-settings/](https://wordpress.com/support/privacy-settings/)

Username Privacy: that’s something you need to ask [Wordpress.com](https://Wordpress.com) support.

  2. Hey!

    > *Does this mean that WordPress itself will be hosting my site?*

Yes – [WordPress.com](http://WordPress.com) manage the hosting for you as part of the plan. This is known as “managed hosting” [https://wordpress.com/support/choose-a-host/#frequently-asked-questions-about-managed-hosting-with-word-press-com](https://wordpress.com/support/choose-a-host/#frequently-asked-questions-about-managed-hosting-with-word-press-com)

    > *So is protection from WHOIS and other entities built directly into your site when you purchase a domain with WordPress?*

Yes – by default, privacy is activated: [https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-registrations-and-privacy/#privacy-protection](https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-registrations-and-privacy/#privacy-protection)

    > *are these all public, including first and last name?* Also, I’ve tried to look at a few sample bloggers to see what personal information their profiles might show, but I can’t seem to view anyone’s profile but my own…

It can be public if you want it to be, but it doesn’t need to be if you don’t want it to. It’s possible to use a Display name, and it’s also possible to hide a profile from view altogether: [https://wordpress.com/support/manage-my-profile/#how-my-profile-displays](https://wordpress.com/support/manage-my-profile/#how-my-profile-displays)

    > *Why did this show instead of the updated username?*

It sounds like the order of the way things were done were awry here – if you confirmed the change in username, it’s possible that you got that email before that change, or there was a lag with that email being sent… It’s also possible that this email address is email specific and only you would see this on the page if you’ve click the link in the email…

What are you building? I’ve got tonnes of information from this forum and find it useful. 🙂
