Questions around best practice in outsourcing fairly complex WordPress site

[ad_1]

Hi all, I’m a product manager and entrepreneur and I’m overseeing the development of a WordPress project. I’m trying to ensure I have the right process in place.

I have free-reign on who to appoint and what process to follow. I could for example appoint a separate developer and designer, or use an agency that provides both of these services.

For context, the site is a bit more complex than a standard business site. All the details aren’t important for present purposes, but broadly speaking its a kind of directory site with various post types, and various directory views for searching and querying the post types.

It’s not rocket science, but I’m just saying that its needs thoughtful planning around information architecture and user flow. This thoughtful planning is usually done with a UX designer, and only then is the site built.. But I dont love that approach because as a product manager I find it hard to sign off ideas in the abstract, and even high fidelity clickable prototypes are abstract IMO.

In the past I’ve had projects with a robust design and UX stage to commence, but once site is live and you begin to fully engage with the content and with the dynamic elements, things start to shift, ideas change or crystalize.

So the standard process isn’t very agile. I suppose I could follow the standard process but keep the designer on board and then continuously iterate once the first version of the site is live.

Does that sound like the best approach? Any other tips or suggestions?

To throw some curveball ideas, what if we just design basic wireframes at first, developer then builds the site ugly but we get to see all the content types and elements at play. Thereafter we get someone to design properly and we put on a new skin? Just spitballing here. Any suggestions on how to approach this?
