Hi, I recently joined a small organisation and am in charge of maintaining their wordpress website. However, the site takes forever to load and has some health issues such as a high memory usage.
The org has recently undergone a brand refresh so I am taking the opportunity to completely redesign as well as the rebuild the site to try and fix these fundamental issues, which brings me to my question.
Would it be feasible to completely overhaul the website? Or are there ways to speed up the site that aren’t bandaid solutions like downloading more plugins? As much as possible, I would like to have a robust site with minimal plugins so as to simplify maintenance for years to come.
Some details: the site currently uses Divi although I am open to other builders if it means reducing plugins. The site contains historic data — mostly years worth of articles — which I believe is adding on to its file size (about 5GB). The site also currently uses 34 plugins which I am unsure is a normal amount.
Would love to hear some suggestions and if hiring a professional would help with the backend issues. I’m new to WordPress but have experience in UI/UX and will be taking on the redesign myself. Thanks in advance!
