Hi, I have recently transferred to a WordPress site but didn’t carry all the old URL pages across when I did. For example I have a URL of a news story which is **/our-story/news/103-weve-seen-a-horse-fly.** If I redirect this URL back to my main news page, will it mess up the SEO and google rankings?
If this sounds stupid or obvious please allow me I’m still pretty new to all this.

The best case is for the content and the URL to remain intact. Second would be doing a 301 to something similar. But now are you trying to choose between leaving the URL as a dead end and redirecting it somewhere that’s mostly unrelated to the older content? A 404 would definitely be worse from the search engine’s perspective than doing a 301 redirect anywhere else. You can’t know for sure how the search engines will react but a 301 would be better.
