Restrict public access to media files

Is there a way to prevent visitors from directly accessing my media files via their /wp-content/uploads/ permalink?

ie [https://yourwebsite.com/wp-content/uploads/09/imagefile.jpeg])

I’ve tried a multitude of plugins and googling but I have not had any luck.
