Safe-editing/Backup advice

[ad_1]

Hello, all.

I’m new to WordPress, just to make it clear. I need to develop a social news-room/platform in WordPress for a University project.

I already know that WordPress is capable of doing everything we need it to do, but there is a small problem preventing me from properly working.

The project already has a website built in WP, fully designed and with a lot of content. I’m scared of messing around with themes and plugins needed for the part I’m in charge of and end up ruining the already existing content/design of the website.

Edit: for example, yesterday I added the BuddyX theme, which I intended to use for the user registration page, and it messed up the header of the website, in all pages. My heart skipped a beat but I managed to figure out how to fix it, eventually.

Could you give me some advices in how to safely work on my part of the project without risking the destruction of the rest?

I have software development experience, and in that area we use repositories, commits, etc, to safely work with branches. Is there something similar?

Thank you so much in advance. Cheers.
