Searchable pdf library

Hey everyone. Please explain this to me like I’m not a very smart man.

I’m very new to WordPress. I wish to add a searchable pdf library to my website. I want all of the text in the pdfs to be indexed in the site, I think that’s the correct term, and appear in search results.

What is the best way to go about this? I’ve explored Google searches and plug-ins but I’m stumped. I have about 500 20-page pdfs that need to be added.
