Should I be concerned that someone is making a bunch of fake accounts on my website?

I have a WordPress site with Paid Memberships Pro and I’m getting absolutely spammed with fake accounts. I haven’t advertised my site much, since it’s still new and there’s a lot of work to do on it, so there isn’t many real accounts. I checked recently and someone, probably with a bit, has been creating hundreds of accounts in the past two days.

I looked up why someone would do this, and I guess the most realistic reason is bots do this to comment backlinks to their site. I don’t have a comments section, so they won’t gain anything there.

One of the fake accounts actually tried signing up for a paid membership, but the card was declined. I guess they thought maybe a paid membership would get them comment section access and that the fee was worth it to spam backlinks.

In either case, I’ll probably adds captchas to my site when I get around to it, but, I’m still wondering if there’s any real risks here, or if it’s just kind of a waste of bandwidth.

My site does have AI tools on it, so I suppose they might be wanting to spam my AI, but it looks like they haven’t been doing so, and this can probably be fixed fairly easily with captchas.

Should I actually be concerned about anything, or is the worst that can happen just that they can waste my bandwidth and API requests, and I should just add a captcha and move on?

  1. Probably should start with a captcha and then check if they continue the spamming. If the situation is really bad and the bots create thousand and thousand users it could slower your database which leads to slower website and worse seo rating
