Single image link to gallery?

Hi Johannes,
I like the simplicity and light weight of your plugin.
I’m curious if it can be used in a certain way with the default WordPress gallery shortcodes, i.e.

What I want to do is have the first image in the gallery be shown as a single image that links to the rest of the gallery. Is this possible?
