Hi everyone! As the title suggests, I’m a complete novice taking my first steps into the world of web development.
A bit about my background: I’m an ICT engineer with a primary focus on hardware, but I have some experience as a web developer and several years in software development in other areas.
Over the past year, I’ve built several websites for my various projects and side hustles using a WordPress + Divi combo. More recently, I’ve started diving into WooCommerce.
I’ve been toying with the idea of stepping off the corporate hamster wheel and becoming a full-time website creator. So, I turn to you, my wise and experienced colleagues:
What are the things you wish you had known in the early stages of your career? What should I research right away, and what areas are worth studying in depth? Any recommended resources for learning WordPress, WooCommerce, and Divi? Where can I dive deeper on my own? Also, any tips for automating workflows or repetitive tasks? What are some common mistakes or pitfalls for beginners to watch out for? And finally, what should I focus on while I’m still “practicing”?
Just to clarify, I’m not necessarily looking for business advice (although any tips would be very welcome), but I’m more focused on the technical side. Is WordPress + Divi a combination worth investing time into mastering further?

I have been designing and building websites for over 25 years and things are changing all the time. The environment right now is different to what it was a year ago. The main thing you need is the ability to be constantly learning and exploring.
Hello, I am only slightly less new. I’ve been working hard to make a path for myself and stay out of the pitfalls of changing my mind what I’m learning every 5 minutes
So I am learning HTML, CSS, and Java. I am going to build build a few practice sites in the process and look at all the resources I can.
I’ve learned that if you learn something, the next thing is easier, so even if I was to go in totally different directions, I think that what I’m learning will be excellent fundamentals.
