After building a website for the past month, I paused work on it for a week, because it was basically done. (Actually the site was to be a surprise gift for my wife.)
Then when I went back to edit the site one last time… Suddenly, the site is in accessible. When I type in the URL in **Safari**, this is what displays:
> Safari can’t open the page “[website URL]” because Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server “[website URL]”.
When I try to access on **Chrome**, it displays this message:
> This site can’t provide a secure connection.
[site URL] uses an unsupported protocol. ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH.
And when I try to access on **Firefox**, it displays this message:
>Secure Connection Failed.
An error occurred during a connection to [site URL]. Cannot communicate securely with peer: no common encryption algorithm(s).
Error code: SSL_ERROR_NO_CYPHER_OVERLAP
I realised that I never activated (if that’s the right word) the SSL certificate thing – the little padlock – on my site. I thought that must be why my browser suddenly can’t access it.
So I decide to log into my WordPress account to fix that ASAP.
Then, to my horror, when I try to log onto my WordPress account, this is the message that I receive upon trying to login:
> Error: The username [username] is not registered on WordPress.org. If you’re unsure of your username, you can attempt to log in using your email address instead.
😱 What the fuck. 😱
I’ve searched Google high and low, but cannot find any similar problem or solution out there. Does anyone know what could have happened? I did *not* access the site or my WordPress account for about a week – I did literally nothing – and then out of the blue, everything is gone or inaccessible.
Any help would be AMAZING. I’m desperate Have I lost my account and my website forever? How could that even be possible…!

are you trying to log into wordpress.org or wordpress.com? Or to your website?
WordPress.org is different from wordpress.com (confusing I know), so perhaps try wordpress.com
If you are self hosting the wordpress.org package, recover the site from your hosting.
I should also add, on my hosting site (Bluehost… I know, I’m terrible), I can still log in fine, and my site is still in my name for another year, and I can see all my WordPress plugins, etc. But when I click the “Go to WordPress” button inside my Bluehost management section… I get the same inaccessible error.
Also, also: When I try to do the ol’ I-forgot-my-password thing, it says that email account doesn’t exist in WordPress.org! But of course I can go into my email account and see the welcome email from WordPress still, so it’s definitely the right email account.
In Chrome you can click Advanced then I understand risks and proceed to your website if the problem is the SSL certificate
It sounds like this is an SSL error with Bluehost. Without knowing what type of hosting plan you have with them there’s lots of possible options for you to consider. Consider using a let’s encrypt free SSL, or encrypting through Cloudflare.
FYI there is an instance of your domain name in the Firefox error message in your post. Noticed you masked it everywhere else.
Do you have someone helping you? It’s a quick fix if you have access to the backend. Send a PM if you can’t figure it out.
PM the url and I’ll see if I can access it. An aggressive hosting firewall could of blocked you?
Have you reached out to Bluehost support to ask them what is up?
Also, if you haven’t, might not be a terrible idea to read this as you seem a little confused about com vs org and what “self hosted” means:
