Suggestions for WP website protection

[ad_1]

Hello All, I am NOT a tech person. I have a website for my teeny business built in WP, but hosted elsewhere. I want to adequately protect my site and any other sites I build from hackers and other bad actors. I notice that the prices for the big companies are, well, big! Can you all recommend website protection that is excellent and affordable? I don’t have ecommerce at this time, but may end up adding it down the road. I appreciate your suggestions. Thanks.

  1. I would suggest installing the free version of Wordfence, and in the scan settings turn on compare plugins themes and core files to repositories, activate two-factor authentication for your login, under the firewall settings set up captcha for your login and registration forms. Then, you can use WP hide plug-in to remove access to the WP admin and WP login defaults and set up your own unique URL for the login screen which helps prevent brute force if they can’t find where to try logging in.

    Edit to add links…

  2. For affordable protections, a good start is to follow some best practices

    * Use secure, strong passwords
    * Enable SSL at your host, they should have this as a default
    * Keep all themes and plugins up to date, at all times. Vet all plugins and only use what you need

    Wordfence has a free plan that will provide basic security configurations on top of those practices
