You need a working mail configuration – e.g. use an SMTP plugin like in your local WordPress installation and configure it to use an existing e-mail-account to send mails.
You may also setup a staging site on the real server (staging.domain.example) which can just send e-mails identically to your production site. Having a staging site to test stuff under real conditions is a good idea anyway.
