I’ve a question regarding one problem I’ve with my client.
We need to create a new design for the client’s website while his current active domain is still intact and running.
The thing is that the domain is registered at a different hosting and is currently developed without wordpress installation.
I am aware of staging sites, subdomains or local hosts, but I’m unsure which way would be the most suitable for our needs.
I want to buy a new hosting (while the old one is running with the active domain), create there alternative domain with WP installation, develop the whole site there and then only switch the alternative URLs to the active domain. (I’m not sure how that’s done without any fatal errors though)
Am I looking at it from a good angle or am I missing something?

Many hosting services provide dev and staging environments along with your production site.
If you’re looking to move hosting anyway you should just migrate the site to a service that has these features.
WP Engine is expensive but very good, and they provide three environments for you – Dev, Staging, and Production. You can migrate all the content and the database from one to the other with just a few clicks in their GUI. It also allows you to develop on them and even send links to clients without tying it to the custom domain and, when you’re ready, you just point your DNS to their settings and you’re good to go.
You can also password-protect the installs while you’re working on them so bots can’t crawl them and potentially mess up the SEO on the live site. Once you’re live, just turn password protection off.
Like I said earlier, they’re expensive once you get into higher traffic and visits, but very good.
