the error might have been related to a theme or plugin instead of the database.
restoring the database only might not have addressed the source of error.

if you want to restore the complete site to an earlier version, the full backup (database AND files) would need to be restored.

I already managed to get the site to work again by restoring everything from the backup in plesk.
