Thinking of becoming a WordPress Deve.

I wonder if you guys would be we willing to tell me what it would take to become a good WordPress Dev. Here's my experience:

-Windows desktop and infrastructure for a big public co. moving to owning the .net devs for our "intranet" <– remember those. So content mgmt experience.

-CIO of 130 MM distribution co owning all the tech, including ecommerce site.

-Got super sick for more than 4 years and in my case CIO does stand for Career is Over. :).

-Started to recover, built a little house as an owner/builder.

Today, I am looking for something I like to do/fun with the joy of contribution. I am a capital "I" introvert and like to stay home and fix things. I have created several WP sites for friends and family starting in 2015, but only using plugins for features and maybe the smallest amount of php and css. I was a web dev. for minute during my diagnosis period years ago, so I have familiarity with coding.

What should I learn and would a mentor or internship help?

Any comments are very much appreciated. THANKS!

  1. Why pigeon hole yourself into WordPress now? Just focus on web dev in general.

Learn CS concepts, learn to learn, learn to read documentation, learn to pick up any language/framework, and learn to leverage AI. With those skills developed you can pivot to whatever comes up now and in the future.

WP’s best days are behind it in the grand scheme of web technologies, so you’ll likely be starting new projects with something else in a few years anyway.
