Trouble with serving correct thumbnail size on home page

[ad_1]

Not sure if this is the right subreddit for this type of question so sincere apologies if it is not. I'm having a hard time figuring this out but I would really like to get to the bottom of it.

I have thumbnails which display on my home page for my post's featured images. The dimensions of the featured images are 1400 x 560. Originally I was getting this msg from the Jetpak image guide that the images were 3x too big for the homepage which I understand:

I tried turning on the Jetpak Image CDN, regenerating thumbnails, and now I get the below. The thumbnails are now quite blurry. I've since turned that off but I can't get it to go back to being too large (at least they weren't blurry). It's strange as you can click into a post and then navigate back to the homepage and it will once again be the 3x too large version, but then after some time it will revert back to the too small / blurry image. Why can't I just serve the image in the dimension it needs (768 x 307)? The site is www.rpgcriticalhits.com if you need to take a look. Any advice would be very much appreciated.
