I have a website that is down and am trying to get back up. Years ago I had a customized website designed and they saved their backup in the root directory. I cannot get back into the admin area and am just about to nuke it and reinstall wordpress over the top of everything. I do have those backups downloaded via ftp, but really have no way to know how to reinstall them. Is it as simple as overwriting those wp-admin, wp-content, wp-includes, and wp-snapshots over a fresh install of wordpress? Instead would I need to redownload all the plugins and reactivate them before overwriting those wp-xxx folders?

What files does your backup contain?
Typically you would restore like this:
1. Install a blank version of WordPress
2. Replace the following folders with the ones from your backup
– Themes
– Plugins
– mu-plugins (if it exists in your backup)
– Uploads
3. Restore the database.
4. Run a find and replace on urls
