The web developers who built the website of the organization I work for put a random photo in the blog sidebar that doesn’t relate to our organization or link to anything, but now shows up with every blog post. I have tried to remove it several times through the widgets section but when I click remove and update, I get this: “There was an error. The response is not a valid JSON response.” This also happens when I try to update the image to something else that is at least from us, or when I try to change ANYTHING on the widgets. Nothing is changeable, I just get this error.

It’s hard to say without knowing how the site was developed, but there’s a possibility the widget, or widget content, that you’re trying to remove is hard coded via a hook in your theme’s functions, or via a plugin.
As a codeless workaround, see if you can locate the image in your media library and delete it.
Otherwise contact the developers to ask them about it, or if you no longer wish to work with them hire a qualified developer to diagnose and fix the issue. It sounds like something that can be resolved in under 1 hour, but your developers might do it free under warranty.
Edit to add: seems like something that’s a holdover from development, maybe testing they have the right hook for side loading other content, or devs goofing off and leaving it in production. Either way if it’s not supposed to be there and you can’t resolve it yourself, they should correct that for you.
Alternatively, was that always there? If not maybe it’s a poor quality plugin that is causing the issue.
You should try installing the Classic Widgets – WordPress plugin and then attempt to delete the image. I think it will work
