  1. There’s some severe mental health issues clearly going on with Matt and he’s lashing out in unpredictable and unexpected ways. He needs to be stopped immediately and committed to an inpatient facility.

  2. I saw Matt post this in Slack a few minutes ago. This is a bad precedent that anyone may be charged for access to the repo at this point.

  3. If WP implodes because of this guy, where are we going to build websites. I’m not going to use squarespace that’s for sure 😅

But seriously, this situation is absurd. Surely MM is crushing for a removal from his position? I don’t know the hierarchy at WP as a business, but is it structured that he could be removed?

  4. Matt has had a problem with managed WordPress hosts for way too long. He had the opportunity to build a managed hosting service from the start and chose to make an offshoot instead. He is picking on WPE because they are the largest target. He is trying to set an example and looking like a tyrant in the process.

The victims are the businesses that are being affected by his self righteous behavior. He needs to put the community over his ego.

  5. Matt seems to be punishing all of the users that had landed on using WPE for hosting. It is truly them that is suffering from this feud. Matt isn’t using is for-profit companies as his sounding board but he is using the WordPress Foundation and also [WordPress.org](http://WordPress.org) to air his grievances. It is the users that are truly suffering because of this.

  6. This has made me realize that WP is not the community driven thing I thought it was. There’s one tiny little man controlling it. It’s definitely opened my eyes and made me realize WP is not actually what I thought it was.

  7. What did all of this stem from? Like does anyone have a cliffnotes of context between WPE & WP Engine?

  8. Can someone tell me what the hell is going on ? What does it mean to be banned from WordPress . Org , doesn’t he control WordPress . Con ?
Does that mean ACF won’t be updated again ? What in the world is going on ? Someone explain it to me, in laymen terms.
How is this going to play out ? Will wp engine not be able to upload the plugin ? But is it open source ?
Don’t you love it when lawyers get involved.
I mean these day a simple consultation with an average lawyer will run you 500 dollars for 1 HOUR.

Honestly justice has become out of reach for the majority of American citizens. It is like my friend whose cheating ex-wife, assaulted him and ran to the courts saying he assaulted her. He was recovering from her affair so he was not working at the time, and could not even hire a lawyer, so he had to face the judge and got a 1 year restraining order against him in NY. So basically anyone who does a background check on him for any employe will see that the poor has a domestic violence charge against him while the cheating ex wife who assaulted him, kept upgrading until she met a very Rich sucker. ONLY IN AMERICA. 🇺🇸

  9. for someone who just “open-sourced” their charitable donations, this seems awfully ironic.

Matt, your decisions are impacting the livelihood of not only WPE employees but thousands of people who rely on their services to run businesses that feed their families.

  10. Well, that’s it for me. Time to revive an old headless CMS project I started working on a few years ago. I can’t believe this is happening!!!

But if I can be fully honest right now – looking beyond the optics and looking more at the person – I have a genuine concern for Matt. I think something might be wrong, and he should get checked immediately. I don’t think this is just a tantrum.

  11. He has to be removed
This is possibly the most unprofessional thing I’ve ever seen from such a large company
    Really petty
    Really immature
    Really unprofessional

  12. Mullenweg’s net worth is around 400 million.

Automattic’s estimated value is 7.5 billion.

Lets all take a step back and just process this information. This really epitomizes corporate greed and intentional lack of oversight with a “shell” sham .org structure.

  13. So Automattic launches a Pressable campaign to move from WP Engine at no cost and then roughly 2 hours later bans WPE from dotorg. There is so much conflict of interest here it is absurd.

Sure, A8C will gain some business and WPE will loose some due to Matt’s scare tactics, but this personal vendetta is becoming disgusting to watch. The only thing all of this has done for me is ensure to never recommend Pressable, VIP, or WP Cloud to anyone. I wouldn’t want to be in business with a company that has Matt at the top.

  14. Man, this situation would be a lot more “heh, grab the popcorn” if I hadn’t just paid for a year of service two days ago and scheduled that massive migration for Friday…

  15. WPEngine today. Who’ll be next? Is it time to leave? With all respect to its qualities, I do not trust WP any more.

  16. He keeps saying legal attacks… from WPE
They sent him a C&D, to Matt (maybe A8C) … and they make it clear that it’s not against WordPress.org.

The ask is “take it back” and “shut your mouth”,

    Is that the legal attack?

  17. Man, I was actually starting to migrate sites back from Webflow to WordPress. Only through 2 – but WPengine is my host of choice.

Gonna put things on hold until cooler heads prevail.

  18. Y’all think Matt is bad? Wait til you cross the Plugin team with one line of code they don’t like.

  19. Super cool of Matt to just make the lives of a ton of WordPress users demonstrably more difficult. Think about how many agencies and individuals (including my workplace, work tomorrow will be fun…) use WPEngine who aren’t privy to this drama whatsoever and are just trying to make a living? THOSE are the people who have now become the victims of this situation. All of the developers who try to make an honest living by working on websites and all of their clients who rely on their websites to generate them revenue and exposure, who are also just trying to make a living. Imagine the EGO required. How shitty is that?

  20. >…regarding their disabling and locking down a WordPress core feature in order to extract profit.

    Uhm…. Doesn’t WordPress.com do this very thing?

  21. This is unconscionable. It doesn’t harm WP Engine. It harms their customers. You know, *WordPress customers*.

  22. How can it be bad to demand and have an opinion on what YOU CREATED? Matt is 100% right, WP does not have to bear the costs that WPE generates when they are the ones who are getting rich along the way without giving anything in return.

It seems that many people are going too far with this open source thing…

  23. It should be noted that Automattic owns Pressable, a WordPress hosting company. Pressable is offering WP Engine contract buyouts.

What I see is a new perspective on WordPress; it’s not a “true community project”, it’s mostly Matt and Automattic.

  24. If WPEngine changed their name to WebEngine or some shit would this problem go away? (Not posing this as a solution, trying to isolate what exactly the problem is)

  25. I’m an end user who has about 20 (+ dev and staging) sites on WPE for my org. If WPE didn’t make things so easy to manage I wouldn’t be on WordPress at all. This will only send users to f-ing squarespace.

  26. On the bright side, maybe this means we can skip doing updates for a while! Everybody, just don’t bother with updates until this thing is settled in courts.

Or maybe someone can start a class action suit. W-Penguin users have not done anything to be banned from the repository.

  27. If it’s true that WP Engine haven’t donated anything to WordPress ever, shame on them. It’s completely reasonable for Matt to expect some sort of donation given the amount Automattic are earning.

HOWEVER he’s going about it the wrong way. Automattic should be providing some sort of value add or exclusivity to WP Engine. Another way companies give back is by paying for a small dev team to work on WordPress and this has obvious synergies back to the company. I don’t think threatening WP Engine is the way to go. I can understand that Matt has probably been asking for years and years and has probably resorted to legal action after being ignored for so long. Possibly Matt is not committed to the legal action and would prefer to settle, who knows.

I can’t understand WP Engine’s attitude here, one would think they’d see value in supporting the software their existence is based on. I do wonder whether there’s more to the story.

  28. Funny that wpe who is worth millions and has so many customers – has not come back with a single “solution “ for its customers. It’s their obligation to solve this mess for their customers who pay them thousands every month. But they havnt done anything to solve the on going problem. That alone is enough to make a company look unreliable.

  29. I don’t even use WordPress but reading that blog article has completely put me off ever wanting to use WordPress or suggesting it to people. It’s pretty clear just by reading it that the motivation behind it is driven by WPEngine making better decisions and actually winning customers over.

Matt just seems incredibly egotistical and that blog is nothing more than an unfiltered and very unprofessional rant.

  30. Is there anything WP Engine is objectively doing wrong? Are they violating any terms and conditions? Or is it really just some guy that doesn’t like them for personal reasons and goes berserk?

  31. i think this wont happened if wp engine is somewhat paying them, i think its like reselling a product but tweaked to make it look like its their orignal product.
