Uploads folder has ENORMOUS amount of files that are not in folders. Is there are way to make WordPress put them into dated folders?

I’m used to seeing uploads in dated folders by month and year.

This client has over 4,000 images in their uploads folder and they are just free-floating. It takes forever to even open via FTP. I’d like to know if there’s a way to put all these folders into the usual dated folder system without screwing up the file paths.

  1. By default, the year/month format is turned on. You can enable it again, and all media uploaded through the media manager will start sorting them into their dated folders (in theory).

Under settings >> media make sure the “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders” option is checked.

You may also want to ensure those files are being used on the site. Your client might have been using their WordPress install like a Dropbox and storing stuff there.

An audit might be needed if it’s slowing down the site.
