User signups causing lag?

[ad_1]

This is a weird one, but I’m trying to pinpoint the cause of lag on my site recently

It is a long-running site with a large logged-in userbase, cached, etc, usually runs great

Lately it has not been, and CPU Load is very high. I can pinpoint the exact moment it occurred, and prior to it, I notice many signups. More than usual. Say about 30 over a 48 hours period. Over this 48 hour period, the CPU Load seems higher than usual, and at a certain point it gets way too high and has been stuck there ever since.

This again seems to coincide with the 30 new user accounts in a small period of time

This was NOT a spam attack. This was a human user making novelty accounts with throwaway emails, it is known for a fact. Whether he activated them or didn’t idk. They are unused today.

But it seems odd this CPU Load increase would coincide with this. Is it related? Any possible connections you can come up with? Is WP doing some kind of pending/activation checks in the background?

  1. Impossible to say. But this sounds like bot spam. What makes you think it was a human? No WP does not run background activity on signups.

  2. How long has it been since the lag started?
Does it effect both the backend and front end?
Are you measuring site speed with any tools (like New Relic)? Who is your host?
