I use the all-in-one migration plugin. I would like to be able to back up my live website to my PC (or localhost), so that I can make localhost changes and then re-upload the site back to the webspace in order to update it. This way I always have a backup copy of the site on my PC. I don't just want to make changes on the live site directly without making a backup locally.
Will this work as simple as that? – i.e. would the plugin allow me to download my site to my PC each time as a file, like it normally works with?
And importantly, would there be issues with the site pages URL format moving the site back and forth like this?
Not possible unless your PC is accessible publicly.
You should be backing up, regularly, to a remote storage location anyway. This is easily done with UpdraftPlus or WPVivid – you can schedule them to run daily, weekly or monthly and send the backup to Dropbox, AWS S3x G Drive, SFTP, etc.
One trick that you can do is to set up the same plugin in Local and set its backup location to where your live site backs up to. This way you are able to perform a restore from a live site backup.
Btw I hope I hope your live site doesn’t have anything changing on it like comments, ecommerce orders, new users, etc. Overwriting the live site isn’t a good idea. WordPress makes it possible to make content as drafts so there shouldn’t be any need to use your local site for that.
Yes, you can do this. Personally I use Local, by Flywheel. I just spin up a new site, locally, install all-in-one migration, and restore the backup to my machine. You could then make changes locally, back up your local site using AIO, and then restore the backup on the live site.
