I recently got an internship with a local gov by me. It was just suppose to be a 2-month internship but now I do not have an end date. I have messed around with the website and redesigned some pages (plugin is Elementor) but that is about it. Unfortunately, no one here really knows anything about wordpress. They do not have a tech department. So they just kind of have me interning with the media coordinator lol. Also, this is my first time working with wordpress, I am a developer but usually code in python and react. So I do not have any previous experience with the maintaining/updating a wp site.
But anyway, now that I have "unlimited time", I am hoping to get some guidance. As in, besides just making the design of their website look better, what are some other aspects of wordpress development that I could start to look into? Im the only one who is working on the site. Really want to do as much as I can so that I can have great points to put on my resume for experience!!!

Best case if they allow you to convert the Elementor site to a custom theme
Set meetings with stakeholders, people in the organization who care what content and functions are on the site. Learn what objectives they focus on. Do the same with users/customers.
Eventually you’ll have a list of things you could do.
Then prioritize them with a RICE or MoSCoW scoring matrix. This will give you a roadmap.
Writing code is great but learning how to connect the tech to business objectives and customer needs is much more important. This will be an important piece of your resume when it’s time to get the real job.
