What factors do you think were (and are) responsible for WordPress being so much more popular than other open-source CMS platforms like Drupal and Joomla? Why did WordPress end up getting substantially more support in comparison?

Well just like popular social networks, WordPress reached critical mass and once you reach critical mass, it is really really hard if not possible to displace.
Another thing that made WordPress so popular is that your average person can pick it up and build their own website without knowing how to code And on the other hand, if you do know how to code, you can also use it to build enterprise level solutions.
Then you have the ecosystem of plugins that give you a huge amount of functionality.
But even today, I would say that the majority of WordPress users, don’t understand its full potential.
I will leave you with this. In 1999, I was working for a what are now called the Big 4 firms. I was working for one of them.
We spent 10 Million Dollars, developing a solution which required a total of 35 resources and it took us around 6 months to complete.
A couple of months ago, I single handedly developed an even more advanced solution similar to the one we built in 1999. But I did it in 7 weeks and I did it alone.
Keep in mind 10 million dollars back in 1999 is probably the equivalent of 16 million dollars today.
I used several plugins and some custom code.
This is the power of WordPress.
I don’t know about Drupal or Joomla today, have not touched them in a decade. But at the time, WordPress was *much* easier to use as a beginner. You could install it and start your website using the already nicely developed backend.
For Drupal or Joomla you had to start to think about the type of pages you needed and configure stuff on the command line. While professionals, who know what they were doing, were fine with this. For any beginner this was a big hurdle to overcome.
