What is the correct/best way to display icons before menu items?

I imported Bootstrap icons CSS and added this to my menu items, literally inside the label.

It “works” but I can’t imagine it’s any good for SEO. What is the recommended way to display an icon before menu items? I’d prefer not using an extra plugin if I can. Thanks in advance!
