What you’re trying to achieve generally is a secure, fast loading website which has longevity.
Choose good hosting.
Use minimal plugins as possible and when you do use plugins you should only opt for ones which are well supported.
Choose a theme which is well supported.
Optimize your images.
The thing to remember is text just needs to be read. It doesn’t require a box around or a lot of other stuff. Think google and craigslist.

proper documentation (of customization, role of plugins, server environment, etc)
proper stage/dev environment
off-site backups (that work)
properly set basic optimizations (page and object caching, image optimization, cdn, compression)
