What should an Advanced Beginner → First Time Freelance Designer bootcamp include?

[ad_1]

I’m helping to plan a WordPress design course in West Africa on behalf of a major international development organisation\*. The **two-week intensive course** will take 40 students (aged 20-35) with basic WordPress experience and give them the skills needed to pursue a career as a freelance web designer.

Given the time-limited nature of the course, what are the [80/20]\*\* **general** **website design competencies** (e.g. initial project design/problem brief/testing; what else?) and **particular** **WordPress skills** (e.g. using the dashboard/site-editor/templates/blocks/plugins; what else?) that would enable students to:

1. Pursue work as a freelance web designer with the ability to deliver a website from conception to completion;
2. Understand this area and its resources well enough to continue personal development in the field.

I’m imagining a list of the general and specific competencies (as above) and a sequential learning path with duration estimates for each step. Something like:

* setting up a WordPress account \[half a day\],
* setting up a local development environment \[half a day\],
* example site projects to give a representation of the kinds of sites typically requested and the competencies (from the lists above) that they introduce
* blog \[2 days\],
* setting website goal and requirements, basic out-of-the-box WordPress basics, Elementor plug-in…
* e-commerce \[3 days\],
* WooCommerce plug-in, etc…
* business site \[2 days\],
* personal website \[1 day\],
* what else?
* basics of SEO (how important is this for a web designer?) \[duration estimate…\] * basics of domain registration (important?)
* basics of hosting (important?)
* launching the website

However, I’m betting that y’all are more qualified to structure this learning path, so feel free to discard my suggestions and start from scratch. If you can provide favourite resources for any of these, so much the better. Thanks in advance!

N.B. I’m new here. If there’s anywhere else I should be posting this (e.g. a webdesign sub), please let me know.

\*Don’t get me started on the madness of a bureaucracy that tasks someone with no web-design experience to create a bootcamp on how to do it. Hopefully with the Internet’s help, we can put together something worthwhile.

\*\*A slight abuse of meaning, I know, but hopefully you catch my drift.
