What’s the best way to have html5/webm videos embedded in a blog post these days? What format? What plugin?

Basically, it would be great to mimic GIF’s, but gif’s are limited to 256 colors while html5 videos are much higher quality.

It would be great if these html5 type videos can be self-hosted on my wordpress server (whereas before I used gfycat RIP), but does wordpress support these files very well? What would be the best way around it? And would it display on all mobile/desktop/browsers all the same? Would a plugin be needed?

  1. It should be pretty straightforward to add videos to your posts just by adding/uploading them using the default editor. If I’m right the supported file types are mp4, m4v, webm, ogv, wmv and flv. I mostly use webm videos as well.
