When to use a page hierarchy vs menu?

I just tried my first new theme ever. Our old theme, before I got involved, was installed in 2011. This new theme shows me a hierarchy of pages on the left, which I guess could be a useful way to navigate? But when would you use that vs using a menu? I’m guessing it’s better for a blog based website where you might want to show every page going back a dozen years? Maybe I should disable it and stick with menus since we really only want current information on the site?
