Which resource will teach me WordPress from beginner to the point where I can start applying for WordPress junior roles or contract work?

Hi all, before you baptise me with a rain of fire thinking I did not go to the sticky, hear me out.

I noticed the WP sticky and its link to start learning it, and I have seen the learning site, but I found it to be disorganised and confusing to me, in the sense that I couldn’t figure out which video I should watch first, or the order I should watch them in, or which path to take.

I wish to learn WP to help with my hunt for a job, but first, where can I learn WP from scratch to the point where I can start looking for WP work?

I would preferably like the content to be free, but I don’t mind paying a reasonable fee for a tutorial as long as it fulfills my requirement.

Thank you.

  1. First, let me apologize in advance. I am a WordPress “newbie” myself, so if my answer is inaccurate or unsatisfactory, please forgive me, but I wanted to at least *try* to help a little. 😉
Anyway, as I said, I’m still new to WordPress, although I’m getting more comfortable to it, and that’s mainly because of two things:
    1. Practice & Use – The best way to learn *anything*, though admittedly not the easiest or fastest.
    2. The WordPress [Codex]), which is in my experience perhaps the greatest source of wisdom and practical information for using WordPress that exists. It is also, btw, an official part of the WordPress [organization]), so you can trust its veracity.

I unfortunately don’t know exactly *how* new to WP you are, so you may already know about the codex—if this is true, I’m sorry. But if so, maybe someone who *doesn’t* know about it will read this and find it helpful. 😉

There are also several outstanding videos on YouTube that explain most of the fundamentals (and even some with advanced topics) of WordPress (You literally **can** learn anything from YouTube lol). One of the most helpful for me was [this]) one.

Finally, similarly to the aforementioned WordPress Codex, there is another “official” source of learning that is great for easing oneself into using it instead of just listing reference information like the Codex. This is, of course, the WordPress [Learn]) tutorials page, which lists many awesome tutorials.

Finally, if I can leave you with one more suggestion, you may also want to check out the appropriately named [WP Beginner]) Website, which also hosts some excellent, inspirational (even) guides.

Anyway, I hope this helps point you in the right direction. Either way, I wish you luck and good fortune in your blogging and/or contracting endeavors. I know the above resources may not be perfect, but you **can** learn enough WP to accomplish the goals you mentioned in your post, or at least *start* on the path. 😀

    Yours faithfully,

  2. Depends what you want do, design or development? Making templates and understanding the php code within templates won’t take long but if you want to make plugins, you’ll need a firm understanding of PHP but you can make simple plugins as you learn along.

Time wise? Everyone is different but I would aim for 8 – 12 months.
