why does people in this sub recommend not using page builder like Elementor?

[ad_1]

And if you aren’t using page builder do you just write code to the site files and write your own theme?
I am sorry if this is a bad question but I am learning

  1. The most basic reason: it is an unnecessary dependency on a third-party product, which happens to be also somewhat heavy.

You can achieve a lot with a solid and flexible theme combined with blocks. And if you need a little more, some custom CSS.

  2. There are always better ways. And people wanna flex. But Page builders have their place and advantages for those who don’t code. It a depends on the situation, and timeline.

Most worry about the bloat. But you can optimize. And it’s not a big deal for small, local businesses that operate in places with fast internet…

There are design and functional limitations, for the most specific cases. But it’s not like all have the skillset to take advantage of full control anyways. Not everyone has the clientele (or employer) who cares or needs it.

All Elementor sights start to look/feel the same. So? Again, if someone doesn’t have the clientele, why does it matter? Few local pizza shops would require extensive branding.

Page Builders are often non-transferable, built around shortcode. In other words, if you try to leave the platform, all your content becomes jibberish. Not a big deal if you have only 5 pages, no blog, or backpages.

Finally, it’s not a great way to upgrade and learn code.

Alternatively, everyone uses the workflow that works for them and their clients/niche. Many like to build around ACF or Genesis and Gutenberg (WordPress default block editor). Some like to go full proprietary (from scratch or headless).

  3. In some cases they can be very slow. I think that’s not really true anymore of most builders.

This also depends on hosting resources. Too many people put the slow speeds on the builder when it’s also the server.

I’ve used Divi, Elementor and I recently bought (but haven’t used) Oxygen.

I live Divi more than Elementor and I imagine I’ll like Oxygen now than both of those.

If you don’t, the other option is to use the built in builder with CSS and JavaScript.

  4. So page builder is usually recommended for people who don’t know how to design the layout or who are building the website themselves with no experience in coding or playing with PHP files.

People who outsource it to an agency or want the best performence, shouldn’t be getting a website that was built using page builders unless there’s some really very specific reason to use page builder. One such reason that I can think of is that if you’re building a quick landing page for an event and can’t really spend a lot of time to code the layout which anyway will be scraped after the event. Page builder is good for such temporary cases.

But when it comes to building website that are going to be there for long term, it’s better to hire people who can build the layout without page builders. There’s additional maintenance burden with each third party component. And don’t forget that each page builder comes with it’s own bugs and potential security vulnerability.

Another thing is that adding a page builder is quite easy but once you’ve built the website it’s really hard to get rid of the page builder without visually breaking the website in random places.
