I have also created categories and sub-categories in the Media Categories facility.
WordPress does not come with any such “Media Categories facility” (emphasis on “Categories”).
Where are you getting this from? Can you provide a screenshot?
So that’s what I was missing. I wasnt aware that wordpress didn’t come with it. I saw a media categories option under the Media library menu and thought it was part of wordpress like for projects. I figured it out now that one is the plugins was adding the ability to categorise the media and allowing me to add categories. This led me up believe it was part of wordpress because I know that projects have this feature or of the box.

Although, wordpress actually should have a bulk editor to update things like the author or the alt tags etc out of the box. Definitely a lacking feature.
