Why not just uploading webP directly in 2024 – there are only tiny disadvantages left

[ad_1]

I understand that AVIF might be too early to upload directly. It also has some disadvantage when it comes to SEO / Google Image search (from what I read)

But webP – it’s everywhere

Why not using a tool like xnconvert or other desktop apps to convert prior to uploading it?

Saves a plugin and costs for it, saves server resources, saves additional possible issues with iamge redirects, picture tag, etc

Only when clients themselves get their hands dirty and work the website e.g. create blog posts, then it’s worth it to still use the plugins, or am I completely wrong?

Trying to figure out my setup and if/what I should change

  1. I find it annoying that you need to install a plugin like safe svg just to upload svg files..

Svg has been around for ages and it’s still like not implemented properly..

  2. Do you use an image optimization CDN?

I use EWWW IO and it will. Optimize and serve either jpg/png, webP, or AVIF. It also doesn’t use your server resources or save anything on your server.

Cloudflare Pro has this same feature

Some photos are smaller as jpg. As weird as it may sound, webP isn’t always better

  3. No, you’re not wrong. But when it comes to human behavior, habits take time to change.
