Why Sites Really Need Cleaning Up ……….

[ad_1]

I’ve had self-hosted websites for almost 20 years now. My sites have had multiple additions, subtractions, changes, updates, users, crashes and re-installations. As a result, I have an absolute mess.

So I’m starting with 1 of my sites, and actually the oldest, that I want to clean up. The database has tables of plugins I know I’m not using and there are several folders of old themes and plugins I’m pretty sure I no longer need, or at least I think I don’t.

So I guess what I’m looking for is just some tips and advice on the best way to do this. A “Factory Reset” so to speak that I won’t lose my content but get rid of all the unnecessary stuff. Of course I’m going to make backups, but honestly, I’ve never had much luck with restoring backups. Granted I relied on my hosting provider and Cpanel for the backups but regardless it didn’t go well. Is it possible to sort of ….practice with a database backup? Make sure all the pieces work before I apply them? Like a way to put up a dummy site?

But any helpful suggestions on the best way to go about it would be greatly appreciated.
