We're hosting our own WordPress site, and everything's working fine except that the site would frequently become unresponsive when we try to edit and save a page. Basically when you save a page, the button will get stuck at "Saving", and the whole admin site will become unresponsive in that when you try to open any admin page from another browser tab it'll get stuck trying to load. The only way to "fix" it is to close the tab that was being saved (and got stuck), and then the admin site becomes responsive again.
One thing I've noticed is that this never happens when it's the first couple of times saving a page, ie, if I open a page for editing, the first couple of saves seems to be fine every time. But if I keep editing and saving the same page without exiting the editor, it seems to get stuck randomly beyond the first couple of saves. It's just weird.
Any idea what might be causing it?
Edit: Okay, I think it's the stupid Chrome browser, cause it seems to be completely fine in Firefox. Will have to do further investigation.
Sounds like either 1. A crappy hosting service or 2. Something is wrong with the page itself.
Try 1. Changing your hosting provider for a more capable service or 2. Replicate whatever is in that page in another page and try to edit the new one and save it to find out if the old page is the true culprit or not.
The request never times out? Could very well be an issue with the browser – what’s the memory usage on the tab where you’re trying to make the save?
Are you able to log onto the server? If so, install a package called ‘nmon’ and monitor your CPU, memory, and disk i/o while performing the task.
It’s possible you don’t have enough memory or something is misconfigured.
