Will the law firm be managing the site themselves (including updates and maintenance) after you build it for them or will you/somebody else be doing it?

I always suggest .org. If you like to purchase some thing from Automattic, there is pressable.com.
When you purchase business plan, surely you can use your personal domain.
[Wordpress.org](http://Wordpress.org) is the place you go to obtain the free WordPress software that you get and host somewhere else, [WordPress.com](http://WordPress.com) is a service that hosts that software for you and maintains updates for you as well.
With their business plan, you do get your own domain name.
While you can find hosting that is cheaper, you have to ask yourself are you comfortable with maintaining it as well. I myself wouldn’t use the .com site, but that is me and I’m a huge geek.
You will find a ton of people here who work with running their own installs of WordPress who will instantly tell you “go get your own hosting, don’t pay for their over priced services”.
But, to put it into perspective of the site you want to make… I could have a legal matter that I could save a bunch of money on and do it myself, where I have to go get the forms, submit them to the court, follow up on all things from the court, and all the while go off of hoping i learned to do it right and didn’t miss anything, or I could pay a lawyer who has experience in it, knows how to do it, and knows how to do it RIGHT, and I just work with them on the parts that concern me. For me, yeah I could save money and do it myself, or I can pay more, worry less, spend less time, and use that time to make money to cover those extra costs.
If you are someone who plans on doing websites and make them for other going forward, then yeah, the get it and learn how to fully set up and host it route would be best. If you are someone who works for the lawfirm, and just needs a site up for them and will just mainly work with the end product, the .com service (or someplace else similar, that can deal with all the updates/backups/has support dedicated to using it)
You get a free domain for the first year with the Business Plan (or any paid plan), and you don’t have to deal with security or backups.
