WordPress Development – Hiring – Why Core?

[ad_1]

Interested to hear other opinions: Why would a hiring manager insist on a candidate (for WordPress development) to have “WordPress Core / [wordpress.org](https://wordpress.org)” experience? From what i’ve gathered, it seems you could have two candidates – one having contributed to WP Core and the other not – and their experience in terms of development, PHP, etc. could be nearly identical? Is this just another way of saying they want a candidate that is actively involved / contributing, etc.?

  1. Are they maybe just not being clear on the distinction between [.org and .com]

As in they want someone who can do WordPress development and not just utilize the site builder tools on the WordPress.com product, which I think is more like a Squarespace type offering.

It may or may not have any relevance to the actual job, but they probably *think* it does.
