WordPress Domain transfer

Hi All,

I am a complete noob when it comes to web development basics, couldn’t really make sense of the explanations on Google, so could use some help:

I wanted to give wordpress a shot last night, and I tried one of their paid plans and bought a domain: hospitabledata.com on their website.

I decided I didn’t want to subscribe to their plan, so I canceled but opted to keep the domain.

Now what I would like to do is take the domain I purchased, host it on a server like blueocean, and just build my website from scratch. However, when I tried asking customer service about this, they said something about dns settings and a 60 day lock period to transfer to a different registrar. It all went way over my head.

Can someone eli5 what steps I need to take to host the domain I bought through WordPress on a different server like blueocean?

Thanks!

  1. You have to wait 60 days before transferring your domain, yes. That’s a rule for all registrars.

In the meantime, you may still be able to point the domain to your blue ocean instance. Talk to WP.com support to make sure it’s possible, and blue ocean support for what IP you need to use.
