WordPress environment?

Hi guys Hope you're all doing great , so recently I've been invited to refrech a company website and they're using wordpress. They already have a website live their , since idk nothing about wordpress i started changing in the menu , navbar and i found that the live website was affected ( yeah I'm dumb) . So how can i stage like test environment or an environment that doesn't affect the live website. Thank you guys
