WordPress multisite or single site

[ad_1]

Hi, I am considering moving three similar WP sites to a VPS server at AWS. Now I am considering whether it is better to use WP – Multisite or using cPanel (or a similar panel) to manage the sites separately.

Will 1 GB RAM + 2 CPU be enough for three sites on AWS or is it better to pay extra for 2 RAM + 2 CPU?

Thanks for the opinions or other alternatives!

  1. Multisite is somewhat more complicated than running 3 separate sites, especially if you haven’t done it much before.

Classic multisite examples would be for localized versions of of the same site via wpml or similar plugins or things like a network of essentially the same sites – say franchises of a business.

I always prefer separate installs, it’s a lot more portable and easier to deal with, IMO.

  2. Build 3 seperate sites.

1gb is not enough to run WordPress. 2gb minimum for a single site. 4gb for 3 sites.

  3. Multisite is great if you want to prevent your users from being able to install plugins.

I’d stick with single sites though.

  4. I’ve worked a bit with multi-site as a plugin author.

All the subsites share one set of users. Any given subsite can have any, all, or only an administrator from among those users granted access to it.

It’s really built for a setup where many users share similar sites. The free tier at WordPress.com is an example.

Unless your imagined system has a lot of commonality between the sites you will create, I advise you to go with separate sites and not multisite. They are called [virtual hosts](https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/vhosts/) and are very common and easy to rig on a server you control.

  5. I loved the idea of multisite when it was first introduced but it’s never been worth the hassle. Odd errors and behaviours. For some very specific circumstances it the right answer but not many.
