WordPress needs updating but won’t let me

I’m having issues with a website I work for. It has WordPress 5.3 & says it is up to date, even when I click “Check for updates” but when I try to update or activate plugins it says I need to update WordPress. I try to click to update it in plugins or anywhere it may pop up on the back end, but it won’t load. If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix it that would be great!
